“Live Simply, Give Generously and Practice Hospitality”

Today I met Parker and Barbara Williams, our garden benefactors. Sharing their space with us was a generous gift but that was just the start of their hospitality. They built planter boxes and filled them with primo dirt (“chocolate cake of soil”). Then came the plans for the pathways, plumbing and additional fencing. They blew me away with their down to earth hospitality, generosity and humility. It took me back to when I was a kid and neighbors shared without expecting anything in return. Speaking of which, Robin Nardoni and Gina Cloer were on site planting strawberries, tomatoes, herbs, etc. with bubbling enthusiasm. If love makes a garden grow, we will have a forest in no time! And as the love spreads, Jim LeVeque has offered his talent to help install an efficient watering system. We could use some parent help laying out the hosing to each box. Volunteering is an incredible thing. It builds a special bond between special people who share their talents and learn something new every time they come together.

Thank you everyone who has donated and supported this unique project. We still need donations (Wish list: Crank garden sink that is perfect for recycling water (grey water that can be used to irrigate – under $200.00)

Student Council News

Last Friday, April 16, the student council held the St. Rita Social at O’Malley Hall. William Hurtado and Joaquin Barlow did an EXCELLENT job of putting the event together. The schools that were present besides St. Rita were Assumption, High Point, St. Elizabeth, St. Philip, and Annunciation. It was a great community event, and a good way for our Jr. High students to get to know the students from other schools in this area. We raised about $200 and everyone had a blast!!!

Also on Friday, April 16, we had dollar dress day and raised over $100 for charity! Thanks to everyone who wore free dress!!! Kristine Kuhn~Publicity

St. Rita School 2010 Spring Auction Event

We would like to express our appreciation of the the PTO's Ways and Means committee for the fun and successful Spring Auction which they held on Saturday, March 20, 2010. We also would like to thank the numerous school and church families who donated their time and financial support in order to help make our fundraiser so successful! Yolanda Higman is an International World Baton Twirling Champion and former feature twirler for USC! Be part of the Elite Twirlers.

Build you child’s self-esteem and join baton twirling!! Your child will learn how to twirl the baton and will learn cheerleading routines. Mini Masters Series with Mrs. Love Monday

Mrs. Love is an artist/ parent who donates countless hours to teaching art in small groups to our students. Come and create your own masterpieces. Come and paint a series of mini-master canvass paintings. Learn techniques that the masters used and do it in a mini fashion. Kids will love what they can do on canvass. The purpose of St Rita School is to ensure academic excellence and to provide for the

spiritual formation and the religious education of our students.

A popular saying is “Less is more. “ It’s what we hear Jesus telling his disciples. The follower of Jesus does not depend on wealth or material possessions to give life meaning. What Jesus is saying, in essence, is “Less material possessions is more freedom.” Sound strange? When we depend on God for what we truly need, we discover an inner freedom, which is God’s gift. Recognizing our dependence on God frees us from working so hard to accumulate things that we can’t take with us when we die. The only treasure worth working for is the Kingdom of God. Nothing else matters.

Jesus, grant me the strength and courage to follow you example of dependence on God.

Keep reminding me that the treasure that matters is in heaven. Amen

Holy Week

Make Holy Week special. Take advantage of the traditions of your denomination for celebrating . Take steps to indicate that this is not life as usual, but a special time set apart. Do that through what you eat, what you do in the evenings, what you talk about, and what you do upon waking and going to sleep. For example, you might set aside an evening to read the Gospel accounts of Jesus' passion and death.

If you know of Easter and Holy Week traditions from your ethnic heritage, introduce them to your children. Many families decorate eggs—symbols of the Resurrection—or put together Easter baskets that will be blessed at church. Many churches have services that are filled with meaningful symbols—like light shining forth in the darkness that cannot overcome it—and those rituals speak volumes directly to your child's heart. The story of Jesus' suffering and death are at the heart of Christian faith. They are at the heart of our very existence and meaning. It's easy to be too busy or too distracted to attend to these rites and lessons. But we deprive our children of life and meaning when we do so.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday, with its conspicuous mark of faith, is atypical for Catholics. As we read in Matthew 6:16-18, we are not to mope or moan while fasting. We are to wash our faces and trust that God will see our good works, even those done in silence. We are to carry our crosses with courage and grace.

And we all have crosses, some more heavy than others. It may seem that your neighbor has it easy: She's always chipper, or his yard is neat and his car clean. But no one escapes trouble or sorrow entirely in this life. It may simply be that they have washed the ashes from their faces and bear their crosses in silence. 

So what can you do this Lent to demonstrate your love for God and your willingness to share in the cross his Son carried for us? You can take up the crosses you encounter daily, and you can do so with faith, hope, and love.

One way is through the traditional Lenten practices of increased prayer, fasting, and giving to those in need. These practices can take on many unique forms in the course of even a busy day. 

Think of 40 small steps you might take this Lent as you walk with Jesus on the road to Calvary. Add your shoulder under the cross—his cross, your own, and others'. Even more, try to do so with the trust that God sees your efforts, and that, paradoxically, there is no greater satisfaction or reward.


Taking Up the Cross in These 40 Days

Social scientists say it takes 28 days to change a habit. Lent asks us to change more than a habit. We're invited to change our priorities and the focus of our lives. Maybe that's why Lent takes a full 40 days and happens every year.

There are other reasons that our Lenten journey lasts 40 days. Throughout the Bible, the number 40 holds special meaning, indicating a span of time when significant events took place. It rained on Noah and his ark for 40 days and 40 nights. Moses spent 40 days and nights with God on Mount Sinai. The Hebrew people spent 40 years wandering in the desert upon their deliverance from slavery to the Promised Land. Jonah gave the city of Nineveh 40 days in which to repent. And Jesus fasted in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights.

Our time of preparation in Lent is akin to Jesus' preparation for his work. We spend 40 days fasting, praying, and giving. “By the solemn 40 days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert,” the Catechism of the Catholic Church says. We are called to live as representatives of Jesus today—even when the ashes have been washed away, even when no one is looking.
