The last week of school has come at lightening speed! The graduation was beautiful and my thanks to
Ms. Carnighan and Ms. Cambonga for taking over as I attended my son’s graduation. I have so many to thank for the blessings we have shared this past year through the hard work and caring hands of the many parents and staff. And so in groups I extend to you my most heartfelt appreciation.

Awards Night
Track & Sports
On Wednesday June 2, we honored the 100 plus athletes who finished the track season as well as the inaugural members of our first cross-country team. Each athlete received a medallion for his/her efforts. Varsity Athletes also qualify for additional awards. The B Girls also received a trophy for their CYO Championship. Madeline Salazar, William Hurtado, and Jacob Johnson received “Coach’s Awards” Trophies for excellence during the season. Michelle Basham and Alex Cargal were named MVP’s for their respective teams.
On the following evening, we honored the members of the football, volleyball and basketball teams. Again all participants were awarded medallions for their sports. In football, Stephen Krause and Grant Gonzalez were singled out as MVP’s, while Nick Sanchez, Eric Carbone and JT Ingram earned Coach’s Award Trophies.
In volleyball, the Coach’s awards went to Zach Rose, Clyde Johnson, Madison Hernandez-Barber and Jenny Brady. MVP trophies were awarded to Conor Williams and Sophia Coffey. Basketball “Coach’s Awards” were earned by Sophia Coffey, Laura Ellis and Chris Nofal. Jenny Brady received a “Highest Scorer” trophy, while the Most Valuable Player” trophy was picked up by Landry Assinesi.
For the year, Eric Carbone and Kayla Rix were named as winners of the Sportsmanship Trophies. Stephen Krause and Grant Gonzalez were co-“Most Valuable Players” for the year. The “Athlete of the Year” honor was shared by Alex Cargal and Conor Williams.
Congratulations to all the athletes for a fine year. Thanks also to our wonderful parents for driving, scorekeeping and cheering. A special thanks goes out to our football and basketball tournament volunteers as well as to the “St. Rita Army” that volunteered at the “Raider Relays”.
On a personal note, thank you for the generous gift. It has already gone toward new patio furniture that will be frequently occupied this Summer.

P.E. News
First of all I would like to thank the wonderful donor of the East Campus Field!!! All the children are having such a blast using it and I am very happy to report that the casualty numbers are lessening by the week. It has a been such a fun and exciting year!
The Kindergarten class learned a lot of new games and exercises this year. Keep working on your skipping.
The first graders are professionals at kick ball and had fun participating in PE across the street on the West Campus.
The Second Graders loved, loved, loved pretty much everything but Prison Ball and Soccer would have to be their favorites. As a class they are very thoughtful, helpful and it was so much fun this year.
The Third Grade.... what can I say... They have developed so much over the past year! They always keep me laughing and definitely on my toes. They are all willing to help me and constantly filled with energy and never at a loss for words... They are going to do just fine making the adjustment to the West Campus! I can't wait to see this class play sports in a couple of years!!! We had so much fun playing Knock Out, Relay's, Kick Ball, Soccer, Dodge Ball, Wiffle Ball and their favorite Capture the Flag. I will miss them all very much and I wish them luck!
Thank you to Mrs. Gohrick for making a few guest appearances and helping me out. Also, thank you to all the teachers and the classes who sometimes had to hear us when we were going from one place to another.
I wish the Class of 2010 all the best of luck and please keep in touch with your Alma Mater! Remember to stay true to yourself and if you ever get lost along the way your always have a home here at St. Rita's!!! Behave and have a great summer.... :)

Dear Students and Parents:
I write and foremost to thank you for the wonderful school year 2009-2010 we have enjoyed together. Again history has proven that music has been an integral part of human experience. It satisfies basic needs and expresses deep feelings in unique and powerful ways. I have a unique opportunity to teach important musical concept and techniques while preparing the many liturgical celebration throughout the school year.
You have sung beautifully throughout the school year. Our instrumental (Recorders and Keyboards) classes extends musical experience and understanding beyond the use of the voice. It provides a vehicle for developing skills and for personal involvement. St. Rita’s
School Band (guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, percussion instrument and vocals) provided opportunities for investigation and experimentation with different instruments.
Next season will be equally rewarding! Here are just some of the next year’s highlights.
• St. Rita’s School Choir debut performance at the Cathedral in Los Angeles on October 27, 2010
• Annual Christmas Concert in December
• Spring Concert in May
• Liturgies and prayer services throughout the school year

A Page From The Library
I have enjoyed seeing all the 1st thru 7th grade classes in the library this year! It is a pleasure to help students choose “just the right” book when they ask for help. Whether it’s for their “1000 pages,” a specific type of book for a report or project or just the next book in their favorite series.
Our School Library will be all fresh and ready next school year with lots of new books thanks to the generous donations from families, our scholastic book fair, and other individuals and organizations. Don’t forget us over the summer should you come across some books you’re ready to purge. Our school library is always happy to accept any donations.
There are many fun ways to keep your kids reading over the summer. All the public libraries have summer reading programs with items they can earn after reading so many pages or books. Borders is having their “Double Dog Dare” Summer Reading Challenge for all kids 12 and under. They read 10 books and get to pick out a free one from a selection. Some kids already have forms I have given them or you may download one along with more information directly from the Borders website.
I look forward to seeing the students again in September!

Kindergarten News
We are so proud of our kiddos and of how well they have done this year! They have come so far in
reading, phonics, spelling, math, social studies and religion. They just love to learn!
Our kiddos are really enjoying the new St. Rita Garden, lovingly sponsored by the Cloer and Nardoni families. We plant, weed, learn about the growing process, dig in the dirt and have fun!
Our thanks to the parents who joined us for our recent field trip to "Tree People". We learned a lot about growing things and ecology on our "eco-tour" and had a great time!
Our annual Kindergarten Pajama Party was the highlight of the year! We made a number of fun crafts, munched popcorn, watched movies, played games and had a pinata! Thanks so much to everyone who helped with the food, paper goods and pinata. The kiddos loved it all!
We are busy planning and practicing for our upcoming class play, "Scat the Cat". We are looking forward to our performances, as we learn that God made us all special.
Our heartfelt thanks to all our parents for their support, assistance and generous contributions to our many projects and activities. We can't thank you enough. Mrs.Froio and Mrs.Ludecke
were our amazing room moms this year. Our deepest thanks go to these truly kind, thoughtful,
generous and organized women, who consistently went above and beyond the call for the class and for me.

First Grade News
“May is here, almost June, summer summer, coming soon!” That is the first line from one of the poems featured in our First Grade Poetry Festival in May. All of the first graders memorized and recited poems in front of an audience filled with proud parents, grandparents, friends and relatives. This event is a highlight of the first grade year, and is certainly an occasion which showcases just how much these children have grown in the past ten months!
The first graders are poised and confident, and ready to take the stairs up to second grade. It’s been a year of many triumphs across the curriculum. This class is a group of readers and writers! They groan when I say silent reading time is over, and they all clamber to stand in front of the class and read their journal stories aloud. They’ve learned to tell time, count money, read graphs and identify fractions. They can tell you the three body parts of an insect, and the functions of the different plant parts. They love looking at maps, and can tell you who our neighbors to the north and south are.
The end of a school year is always bittersweet. Sure, we’re ready for a break, but it’s hard to say goodbye to the group we’ve become so close to. Good luck to the students in the years ahead, and thank you to the parents for all your support and participation. Have a wonderful summer!

Newsflash~
WOW!!! Another year has come and gone. Time surely flies when you’re having a blast or if you’re a busy little chickadee in the 3rd grade. As the 2009-2010 year comes to a close, the students and I can reflect upon the past ten months with great fervor. Throughout the year, the students have been busy with...field trips, learning cursive writing, creating & editing complete 6 sentence paragraphs, learning responsibility & accountability, living the SLEs on a weekly & daily basis, book report projects, spending quality time with our 6th grade buddies, philanthropy projects, mastering our multiplication tables, leading school masses, loving music with Mr. Augustynsky, creating Native American tribes, incubating chickens, learning about the English settlers/Pioneer living, hiking through Bailey Canyon, exploring JPL on a private tour, taking pleasure in reading through literature studies with Charlotte’s Web and Little House on the Prairie- On the Banks of Plum Creek, and the list goes on and on. This past spring, we had another successful Open House, where the children were proud to show off their outstanding work & efforts to all of our parents and visitors. The chicken experiment was such a memorable one for our class and we were proud to finally hatch 8 chicks, yet only 4 survived. All in all, learning is always exciting and an adventure in our class!!!
This year has been VERY MEMORABLE! The kiddos and have gone above and beyond their calls of duty as students, especially with our cards throughout the year and our Memorial Day bake sale in May for our American heroes.
Each student is very special and has been putting their God given talents to great use throughout this past year. They have shown great growth and I am so very proud of every student for their accomplishments. Thank you third graders for a wonderful year of laughs, projects, learning, fun, and memories. All of you are very special and will do exceptionally well on the West Campus. May God always watch over you and keep you in His care. Please remember to visit the East Campus and our beloved guinea pig, Henry. Good luck to the Graduating Class of 2010 and may the St. Rita family enjoy a much deserved summer vacation.

The school year has zoomed by! It has been a great year full of learning and fun. Thank You Mrs. Horn for your help in our classroom. The spirit, energy, and the excitement that you brought to the classroom were amazing. Thank you, parents, for supporting our class and school and encouraging your child all year long. Thank you secretaries Mrs. Pearson and Mrs. Kay, the bus drivers who took us on our field trips, and the hot lunch helpers and cooks, who kept us all safe, informed, on time, and well fed. Seventh Grade News
Thank Heaven for Little Boys!
The seventh grade would like to Congratulate, Mr. & Mrs. Jukic, and Big Sister, Emily on their new arrival Jack Gregory Jukic!
The 7th graders have been busy learning about the continent of Africa in History. Many students researched and prepared various food dishes from the different countries in Africa, and presented them for tasting on International Day. There was a wide assortment of flavors, and they were all delicious! Now they are 'traveling' through China, Feudal Europe, and Japan with their new History teacher, Mrs. Holman, who is bringing it all to life! It is a busy time at St. Rita as we look forward to the Altar Servers annual field trip to Knott's Berry Farm and next week, the 7th grade will take part in a long-standing St. Rita tradition -- serving the 8th graders and their families at their graduation breakfast in O'Malley Hall. They are looking forward to being the leaders of the school when the 8th graders graduate.

Although the 8th graders will gladly leave behind the many assignments Ms. Carnighan has been piling upon them in the last few weeks, they will miss their friendly second grade buddies, the daily agenda, and their classmates they have grown up with at St. Rita's. These last four days of "real school," as they call it, will go by too fast. On the agenda for next week: Disneyland, Class Retreat, Pool Party and finally...Graduation!

SPORTS CYO DINNER Capping off a successful year, 7 of our students were honored at Dodger Stadium for different achievements. CYO selects players from teams that make it to the final eight for its All-CYO Teams. They selected Landry Assinesi, Stephen Krause and Grant Gonzalez to the All-CYO football team. Natalie O’Brien re ceived an award for her record in the B Girls CYO Cross Country Meet. Grant Gonzalez, William Hurtado, Conor Williams and Alex Cargal received trophies for their new 1600 meter relay record. Sarah Troescher rounded out the awardees by hauling in three plaques for her CYO records in the long jump, 200 meters and the 400 meters. She is also the holder of the 100 meter record. This week, we will honor all track and cross country runners on Wednesday night in O’Malley Hall beginning at 6:00 pm. On Thursday night, we will honor the athletes who completed all other sports, also at 6:00 pm.
On Saturday we will attempt to make our beach trip a reality. The lat trip ended in a sand blizzard.
The student council
We've had an amazing year full of activities. A the beginning of the year, we attended a leadership workshop with other schools where we learned how to work together and be leaders. We held a spirit week which included a macaroni knockdown, pep rallies and a dodge ball tournament. We held various fundraisers for HCA throughout the year. William Hurtado and Joaquin Barlow directed two successful junior high socials. We had popsicle and bake sales which were well supported. Kacey Benson held a successful blanket drive. We recently sponsored a St. Anthony's food drive. We collected a tremendous amount of food. The people at St. Anthony's couldn't have been happier. For our last project, student council will be donating nine rose bushes to the new St. Rita meadow in honor of each grade. On behalf of student council we would like to thank you all for your support through out the year. Thank you Ms. Carnighan and Mrs. Harabedian for giving us these opportunities .~ Fiona Eustace
Computer Lab
This year in the computer lab we have been very busy. With the implementation of Rosetta Stone, the lab has been constantly buzzing with the Spanish language. Along with Spanish, we have completed Powerpoint presentations, created businesses, written stories, created maps and much more! I thank all of the parents for your support of technology and the students for their excitement about learning on the computer. I am looking forward to having more fun in the computer lab next year with new computers and ENO boards and it is all thanks to you! Have an amazing summer! Miss Rian Feld
“Remember, Reflect, Honor… All Gave Some…Some Gave All”
Thank you so very much St. Rita families and students for supporting the 3rd Grade's Memorial Day bake sale last week. The bake sale was a huge success, as we collected donations totaling $462.50!!! The baked goodies were a HUGE HIT and many students were looking for more! Thank you for your support of this great cause, as we couldn't have done it without your love. A care package comprised of our generous donation, artwork and America poems were sent on Thursday to the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial VA Medical Center/Hospital in Loma Linda, CA. Thank you!!! "Unfortunately, our summer sessions for grades K-3 and computer classes have been canceled, due to low student enrollment. This also includes the Kidz Club daycare for the summer. The sessions for incoming 4th-5th graders and Mr. Lodolo's Math course for grades 6-8 is still open for enrollment. If you are still interested in Mr. Augustynski's music sessions, please notify him directly. All registrations for the above mentioned courses are due as soon as possible and all other monies will be returned/reimbursed. Thank you and have a safe summer! We hope to have a full and exciting summer session offered again in Summer 2011.

Art 2009-2010
Well, it’s that time of year again. Get ready to break out the sunscreen and head for the beach! Before heading out, I just wanted to say that it has been an amazing year for art. The new location in Pac Hall has been fantastic. It has allowed the students to use the space more like an art studio. With the kitchen sink so nearby, the students had many opportunities to paint and use media that in the classroom would be too messy. The art show in March was a huge success. The artwork drew in quite the crowd. Congratulations to all the artists of St. Rita!
